A Message From The Executive Director

Jerry Smith

Message from the Executive Director: Gerard Smith

It’s spring. You’ve already pushed your clocks ahead, have begun pulling out your spring clothes and preparing for warmer days. In this period of tough economic times, the ANIBIC family is pulling together and getting things done. While money is tight everywhere, services must be delivered. Our consumers and their needs are our mission.

There are some very bright lights on the horizon. After a lengthy negotiation, we have finally taken ownership of the new ANIBIC building in Oakland Gardens. We are installing an elevator to ease access to the second floor and we are significantly renovating the building: new roof; exterior improvements; new windows; bathrooms and entire infrastructure are all part of the long term renovation plan.

The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) has informed us that the plan to transfer title to the property in Iris Hill to ANIBIC is making good progress. As a first step, the land has been transferred from the Office of Mental Health (OMH) to OMRDD and the transfer from OMRDD to ANIBIC is in process. John DeBiase, ANIBIC Associate Director, is responsible for the development of our “Third Age” seniors’ Program on this site. The Oakland Gardens and Iris Hill properties provide an outstanding platform for the expansion and delivery of ANIBIC’s services.

These projects are indicative of two things. First, ANIBIC is alive and well and remains committed to providing outstanding services in spite of the ups and downs of Wall Street. Second, others recognize our commitment and record and are willing to place their trust to support ANIBIC’s mission. I urge you all to stop by and see the work that is being done here at ANIBIC. We encourage suggestions and look forward to seeing you at our events. I wish you and your families a happy and healthy spring season.

Sincerely,

Jerry Smith
